Deep Brain Learning: Pathways to Potential with Challenging Youth by Drs. Larry Brendtro, Martin Mitchell and Herman McCall has been enlightening and inspiring youth workers world-wide since 2009. Now this compelling book is available in an innovative one-day training. Offered as a standalone course, Deep Brain Learning® will teach participants the latest brain science research as it relates to the development of children and adolescents. Book and guidebook are included in this one-day training event.

 

Deep Brain Learning® is designed for teachers, clinicians and direct-care staff to better understand troubled youth and how to optimize their performance in educational and treatment environments. During this one-day training, participants will learn:

  • Practical tools to connect with challenging and disruptive youth
  • Methods to motivate reluctant learners
  • Strategies to restore bonds of respect
  • Pathways of the brain leading to trust and self-regulation
  • Key principles important to change in children of challenge
  • The Circle of Courage™ Model’s four universal needs of children in all cultures: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.

 

Optional College Credit:

Participants can enroll for undergraduate or graduate workshop college credit in either Psychology or Special Education. Registration forms will be provided at the training. Course syllabus will be posted on the Reclaiming Youth website. Payment for college credit is payable to Reclaiming Youth and given to the instructor at the training. College credit is offered through Reclaiming Youth and Augustana College (U.S.A.)

Located in the heart of Rapid City, the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn is ideally situated close to downtown shopping, restaurants, parks and walking trails. Rapid City offers visitors all the amenities of a mid-sized city, and its central Black Hills location makes sight-seeing excursions in any direction easy and enjoyable.

Travel Arrangements:

 Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

Rapid City is located in western South Dakota on Interstate 90. When traveling on I-90, take the Haines Avenue Exit (#58). Travel south on Haines Avenue (Haines Avenue becomes North 5th Street). The Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn is located adjacent to the Rushmore Civic Center.

Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is serviced by several major airlines (Northwest, United, Delta, etc.) in addition to several smaller carriers.  The Rapid City Regional Airport is approximately 20 minutes from the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. Complimentary shuttle service is offered to guests staying at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. There are also several car rental agencies available at the airport.

 

About the Trainer (subject to change):

 

 Dr. Larry Brendtro is founder of the Circle of Courage Institute, Dean of the Starr Commonwealth Institute for Training, and former president of Starr Commonwealth serving troubled youth in Michigan and Ohio. He has broad experience as a youth worker, educator, administrator, researcher, and author. He holds a Ph.D. in Education and Psychology from the University of Michigan, is a licensed psychologist, and has taught in the area of behavior disorders at the University of Illinois, The Ohio State University, and Augustana College. Dr. Brendtro is editor of the journal Reclaiming Children and Youth and with colleagues has authored twelve books and 200 articles on challenging youth. His most recent book is Deep Brain Learning: Pathways to Potential with Challenging Youth. He serves on the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, chaired by the U.S. Attorney General, and has trained youth professionals worldwide.
