Deep Brain Learning ~ Book Review

A book review of

Deep Brain Learning: Pathways to Potential with Challenging Youth

Larry K. Brendtro, Martin L. Mitchell, Herman J. McCall

2009, Starr Commonwealth

Reviewed by: Mark Freado

Deep Brain Learning, published in 2009 by Starr Commonwealth, is the most recent contribution to the field by Larry Brendtro, founder of Reclaiming Youth International.  Larry was joined in this effort by Martin Mitchell and Herman McCall, who have provided executive leadership at Starr Commonwealth for many years.  This well-researched book examines familiar concepts from another perspective and promotes new ways of looking at the challenges faced by youth in trouble and those who work with them.

We need your help!

To our readers,

One of our colleagues who works in a day school is looking for help.  She would like to know if there is a curriculum that is skill-based and connected to appropriate pre and post assessments.  The school is an alternative setting with about 250 kids who have all sorts of behavioral challenges.  The kids come and go because of life circumstances, so it is difficult to connect them to traditional school curriculum.  If you have suggestions, please contact Steve Van Bockern at bookstore@reclaiming.com.

Thank you!

Reachable Moments: What's at the Heart of the matter...

By: Dr. Jamie "JC" Chambers

Raphi, age 16, is running wild, sneaking out late at night, drinking and using pot. His parents and five other siblings are worried and beleaguered, they feel hopeless to stop his present course. He arrives at my office smug, indolent and with that look in his eyes-"what do they think coming to this _______ place is gonna do? So, I asked him the ugly question, "what do you suppose your parents brought you here for?" With surprising honesty and boldness, he proclaimed, "They're freaking out cause I'm partying and staying out late, but this is my life and it ain't none of their concern, besides I ain't hurting them."
