The Spirit of Crazy Horse Award Recipients

The sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, came to the Black Hills of South Dakota at the request of Native Americans to create a mountain memorial that would honor the spirit of Crazy Horse. In 1949, Korczak wrote these words about Crazy Horse:

"Crazy Horse was a great leader of his people. He wanted only peace and a way of living for his people without having to live on the white man's reservations. Crazy Horse defended his people and their way of life in the only manner he knew, but only after he saw the treaty of 1868 broken. This treaty, signed by the President of the United States said, ‘Paha Sapa, the Black Hills, will forever and ever be the sacred land of the Indians'. Crazy Horse's tenacity of purpose, his modest life, his unfailing courage, his tragic death set him apart and above the others.’”

Reclaiming Youth International presents The Spirit of Crazy Horse Award to honor those who have a tenacity of purpose in creating courage for discouraged children and youth through their practice, policy development, or research.

RYI Leadership Transition

Effective: March 2006

Dr. Scott Larson, Chairman of the Board of Reclaiming Youth International, announced the retirement its founding president, Dr. Larry Brendtro. The RYI board appointed as Dr. Brendtro’s successor his longtime colleague and vice president Steve Van Bockern. Dr. Van Bockern will serve as chief executive officer, while Mark Freado, who has been the lead trainer for Reclaiming Youth, now becomes vice president and chief financial officer. Continuing as chief operating officer is executive director Carole South-Winter.

Reclaiming Youth is best known for its Black Hills Seminars, pioneering strength based training for youth professionals. The reclaiming youth movement was spawned in 1990 with the book Reclaiming Youth at Risk: Our Hope for the Future, co-authored by three Augustana College professors, Larry Brendtro, Martin Brokenleg, and Steve Van Bockern. Dr. Brokenleg presently is Director of Native Ministries at the Vancouver School of Theology and Dean of the Reclaiming Youth Seminars. Dr. Brendtro continues to serve as senior editor of the journal Reclaiming Children and Youth.

Steve Van Bockern brings to RYI his background as a teacher, principal, director of alternative education programs, and professor of education and special education at Augustana. He headed a Kellogg Foundation grant on the Developmental Audit® and has consulted widely with juvenile courts as an expert witness on troubled youth. Mark Freado is a teacher-counselor and has been state director for the Pressley Ridge Schools in Ohio and West Virginia. He currently is director of Re-EDucation Training and Consultation for the Pressley Ridge Institute, and Executive Director of the American Re-EDucation Association. Both Van Bockern and Freado are certified senior trainers in Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) and Response Ability Pathways (RAP) and have trained professionals worldwide. They assumed their new roles March 1.

Dr. Brendtro is the author of ten books and numerous articles on troubled children and youth. A licensed psychologist, he is past president of Starr Commonwealth in Michigan and Ohio where he continues to serve as Director of Research and Training. He presently is establishing the Academy for Positive Peer Culture which will debut at the 2006 Black Hills Seminars. For information, contact Reclaiming Youth at 1-888-647-2532.
